The Shortest Chapter

Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples. For great is his love toward us and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord.—Psalm 117:1-2 NIV

There are 1,189 chapters in the Bible and the shortest chapter is Psalm 117, shown above in its entirety. This tiny chapter falls numerically right in the middle of the Bible, which is appropriate as its message is at the heart of God’s Word. Praise the Lord for His love endures now and forever.

Heavenly Father I praise You for Your infinite and unfailing love.

Who’s the Greatest?

An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.—Luke 9:46 NIV

In this verse, the disciples argue over who is the greatest and reveal what God really wants. Rather than boasting about personal achievements and competing with others around you, look to how you can be a vehicle for healing. Rather than wanting to be above others, look for ways that you can be of assistance.

Lord, it’s only human to want to be the best. Instead, I long to be like You, to act on love and to help others.

God’s Supreme Creation

You made them rulers over the works of Your hands; You put everything under their feet.—Psalm 8:6 NIV

When you doubt your ability to achieve your dreams, reflect on this truth from the Bible. You are God’s supreme creation. Every quality you need to succeed in life lives inside you, and because of this there is no limit to what you can achieve.

Mighty Creator, forgive me for doubting the power and strength that You have placed inside my mind, body and soul.

God Redeems His People

“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”—Acts 2:36 NIV

In this verse, Peter proclaimed that Jesus is the Messiah and redeemed himself for betraying Jesus on the night of His trial. This powerful lesson of redemption remains true today for all of us. Even if you have strayed from a life of faith, or made a bad decision, your return to Him will be welcomed. God will forgive you.

Because of You, my Heavenly Father, my sins are forgiven and new mercies fall like manna from heaven.

Master of the Universe

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.—Hebrews 11:3 NIV

How you respond to circumstances that are beyond your control has a lot to do with the depth of your faith. When you trust that God is the Master of the Universe and is in control of your life, you develop patience, tolerance and grace to handle any challenge.

Lord, help me to cultivate my faith, to grow spiritually so that my strong beliefs can can guide me through any adversity.

A Lesson from King Saul

Saul groaned to his armor bearer, “Take your sword and kill me before these pagan Philistines come to run me through and taunt and torture me.”—1 Samuel 31:4 NLT

Saul is a tragic figure in the Bible. His lessons teach a great deal about why we fail and why instead of trying to force God to do what we want, we should pray in faith and relinquish the outcome to Him. When you are in a difficult position, instead of trying to rush an answer, pray and open your heart to accept His response.

God Almighty, I long to follow You faithfully even when the outcome goes against my wishes.

You Are Divinely Led

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.—Romans 8:28 NIV

God’s intervention is not always obvious. Sometimes He uses indirect circumstances and unlikely people to help us. Although you may not be aware of God’s hand guiding you through your life’s journey, in time and through retrospection, His work will be revealed.

Father God, when I reflect on my life and see the amazing “coincidences” that have led me to where I am, I know it is truly You leading the way.

A Worthy Journey

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.—2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV

God’s promise is not that life will be easy but that the journey will be worth it. One of the best measures of your faith is how much you trust God when blessings don’t seem to be flowing. In these times, take your eyes off of your problems and focus on God. Life’s most valuable experiences are often found amidst the toughest times.

Lord, the weight of my problems dissolves in the light of Your grace and glory.

Serving God’s Kingdom

Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”—Luke 9:62 NIV

Jesus tells us that to follow His Word, you must look ahead and focus your actions on serving the Kingdom of Heaven. When someone needs your assistance, do you make an excuse as to why you can’t help? Instead, make time to be of service knowing that your actions are following Christ.

Dear Lord, guide me to nurture those around me with a listening ear and a helping hand.

Reflect His Heavenly Light

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.—2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

Devote yourself to developing a closer relationship with God. Are you reflecting His light by showing kindness, patience and generosity with others? When God’s love shines in your heart, you spread His qualities here on earth.

Lord, thank You for shining Your light in my heart and showing me that sharing Your love is the best way to truly feel it.

Are You Ready?

And to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.—Ephesians 4:24 NIV

Jesus is calling you to let go of any emotions, wants and desires that are harming your well-being. Now is the perfect time to reflect on who you want to be. Release your old agendas, leave your old and tired ways behind and begin anew.

Heavenly Father, I am ready for a new life that is focused on serving You.

Who Am I, Lord?

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”—Exodus 3:11 NIV

In the above verse Moses’ response to God’s call is directly opposite to Isaiah’s, “Here I am! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8). Yet it’s understandable that when called to do something outside of our comfort zone, we doubt our own ability. God has given each of us unique skills and gifts to fulfill our purpose here on earth.

Dear God, because of Your power and grace I have the strength and confidence to complete the task You have called me to do. Here I am! Send me.
