The Greatest Gift

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.—Luke 2:11 KJV

Christmas is here! The day God blessed us with His Son, the only Source of eternal life. On the advent of our Savior, the arrival of the One who came to save us, thank God for the greatest gift of all time.

Dear Lord, thank You for the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Today as I celebrate with family and friends I will savor every moment and bask in the peace, love and joy of Your presence.

Reflect God’s Love

But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.—Romans 5:8 NIV
God loved us so much He was willing to demonstrate that love by sending His Son to die for our sins. Today, on the eve of the coming of our Savior, demonstrate your love—and God’s—to those around you.
Lord, on this precious Christmas Eve, help me be a beacon of Your love.

Your Best Is Enough

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.—Luke 2:7 KJV
Mary and Joseph found themselves in a far-away city with no shelter or friends. What to do? The best they could with what they had: a stable, a manger, a length of swaddling cloth. It was enough.
Heavenly Father, help me to recognize that as long as I do my best, it is enough.

The Most Joyful News

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”—Luke 2:10-11 NIV
No other message in the history of the world has brought the repercussions of the one delivered to shepherds huddled on that Judean hillside. The Messiah! Nothing would ever be the same again. God’s own Son has come to give us abundant life!
Dear God, help me be one of Your messengers and share the good news this Advent season.

Take in the Wonder

And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”—Matthew 18:3 NIV
Do you remember what it was like being a child the night before Christmas? How excitement and sheer anticipation of the gifts under the tree made it difficult to sleep. Your Heavenly Father God has prepared spiritual gifts for you every day—the Fruit of the Spirit, forgiveness, faithfulness—the list is never-ending.
Heavenly Father, give me a child’s heart. Fill my spirit with your heaven-sent gifts.

All in God’s Time

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son.—Galatians 4:4 NIV
For thousands of years, people watched for the coming of the Messiah. They prayed and fasted and believed. But it was not until “the time had fully come” that Christ arrived on earth. Nothing is ever too soon or too late that is done in God’s time.
Heavenly Father, when I’m in the midst of waiting, guide me to remember Your timing is always perfect.

Be a Cheerful Giver

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.—2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV

In the hustle and bustle of Christmas be aware of opportunities to give. Something as simple as letting someone get in line in front of you at the store or a phoning a friend you’ve lost touch with can spread a little heavenly joy.

Heavenly Father, thank You for pleasure I feel when I bring joy to others. The more I give of myself, the more blessed my life becomes.

Heavenly Angels Abound

The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.”—Luke 1:19 NIV

During Advent Angels seem to spring up everywhere: on Christmas cards and wrapping paper; in countless store windows and Nativity scenes. Take time this holiday season to turn back to the tremendous events of these celestial beings chronicled in Luke and Matthew. Listen carefully, the angels may have something to say to you this Christmas.

Lord, open my ears and heart to the good news of Your angels of long ago… and the angels of today.

Presence Not Presents

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.—Luke 2:14 KJV

The Angel’s Advent message to the shepherds ended with the promise of peace. God sent the Prince of Peace to be a healing comfort to people on earth. When you are experiencing chaos or troubling times, Jesus is an anchor of security, the true Source of heavenly peace.

Lord Jesus, when I am filled with doubt and fear remind me that no matter what I need, Your spirit can touch my heart and fill me with peace.

Joseph’s Abiding Faith

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.—Matthew 1:24 NIV
As we reflect on Advent, look to Joseph’s faith and how his actions are shaped by his deep trust in God. Joseph followed the direction of the angel in his dream and did not hesitate to wed Mary. Later in subsequent dreams, Joseph did as he was told with unquestioning obedience.
Heavenly father, in this time of preparation and renewal help me to be obedient to Your Will and Your Word.

Make Room for Jesus

Be very careful, then, how you live— not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity.—Ephesians 5:15-16 NIV

December can be a busy month with lots of festivities and holiday commitments. Make sure to focus your heart on the true reason for the season. There was no room for Jesus when he was born at the inn. Make room for Him now in your heart.

Lord Jesus, my heart is open and waiting for You. Bless me with Your presence.

Trim Your Tree

I am like a tree that is always green; all your fruit comes from me.—Hosea 14:8 NLT

The Christmas tree is a symbol of our everlasting life with God. Just as the evergreen remains unchanged in winter, your relationship with the Divine is eternal. As you trim your tree with bright bulbs, meditate on the blessed Light God brings to your life.

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your eternal love that is always ready to forgive, restore and save me.
