Counting Your Blessings While Recuperating

How emergency surgery reveals blessings from family, friends and God.

“If I could just have one day where I didn’t have to do anything!” Have any of you ever said that? I’ve muttered it plenty of times on hectic days. Well, I got my wish—16 days of doing nothing—but it wasn’t how I’d anticipated it going down.

Some of you might have noticed my blog posts have been missing the past few weeks. That’s because I had unexpected surgery for two retinal tears in my left eye. Retinal issues are always concerning, but even more so for me since I’ve lost part of the vision in my right eye.

And then came the post-surgical instructions I’d have to follow for the next 16 days: “Keep the eye as still as possible. No lifting. No bending. No reading. No checking your cell phone. No computer.”

Yes, folks, I was officially on house arrest.

I won’t lie. The days were long, especially while my husband was at work. Those endless hours provided plenty of time to stress over the possibility of losing my sight.

But they also provided time to count my blessings, and I want to share some of those with you today:

  • Reading my Bible. Yesterday I did that for the first time in 16 days. I won’t take that for granted again.

  • My precious husband who cared for me, did laundry, cooked, cleaned and went to the grocery store and pharmacy—and never once complained about it.

  • Sweet friends who took care of details for me since I couldn’t use my computer, who called, sent cards and flowers, and most importantly—who prayed for me.

  • The good report from the doctor. The welds from the surgery held. The fluid is gone from the eye. And he said everything looked good as far as the healing process went. Thank You, God, for the gift of sight!
  • Bending over to pick up a piece of fuzz from the floor. After 16 days of doing nothing, I can go about my routine–and get back to the tasks God has for me to do.

But best of all, I learned firsthand from this experience that God’s grace truly is sufficient for whatever I’m going through. With new eyes, I see the unexpected blessings God’s had for me along the way.
