“Give us today our daily bread.”—Matthew 6:11

Do you ever think about the bread you eat? Flaky buttermilk biscuits, crunchy bran muffins?

I do, because we grow wheat on our farm. Turkey Red wheat was brought to the United States in 1874 by Mennonite immigrants from the steppes of Russia. They arrived with little more than their faith in God and their faith that this wheat would thrive in their adopted and—and it did. In fact, all of the various kinds of hard red winter wheat grown on the plains have a common ancestor: Turkey Red.

So when I look at bread, I see more than a fragrant loaf. I see those Mennonites traveling across continents with their tiny seeds, trusting to God that they would grow. And when I see rustling, waving fields of wheat I see more than a crop—I see a powerful testimony to a people who had faith that God could make their dreams come true.
